You have reached the Mitten Phone Chapter that meets via conference line a part of the Michigan Council Of The Blind And Visually Impaired; an affiliate of the American Council Of the Blind.
This phone chapter is designed to allow all members at large or who are unable to attend a meeting of a local chapter of MCBVI an opportunity to network, gain support and participate more fully in MCBVI.
We provide support to those who are newly blind and their families as well as to those who are currently members. We also assist parents of blind children or blind parents who are raising children. And need our support. We also provide encouragement and include people with other disabilities, where blindness is a part, such as hearing impairments, learning disabilities, physical disabilities or other disabling conditions. We work toward the goals of the Michigan council of the Blind and Visually Impaired and the American Council of the blind.
We are currently working on accessible voting machines, accessible absentee voting, safety with accessible prescription labeling and our most recent area of concern, unmanned Amtrak stations because of safety concerns such as:
- They are unsafe because it’s difficult to locate the open door on a train with multiple cars.
- There is no authority figure to handle unwanted transient people or disturbances.
- There is no way to know how late a train might be or even what train you are attempting to board.
- There also would be no one to assist passengers to cross over railroad tracks to enter the station or board the train at some places, such as the Kalamazoo station.
The Mitten Phone Chapter gives our members at large or who are unable to participate in a local chapter a venue to share concerns and to do the work of the state organization, The Michigan Council of the Blind and Visually Impaired and the National organization, The American Council of the Blind.
